Old Business

Recap of June 19 BBQ picnic: Food cost totaled $600. We distributed 50 take-home bags to children under age 12.

National Night Out: We will participate in this August 3 event in the Tot Lot, 6:30–8:30 PM. Representatives of the Kent Police Department will visit. We plan to serve ice cream—Tina will ask Frosty’s and Darigold for donations. We will distribute flyers to residences on July 27.

Graffiti: The wood fence at Canyon Apartments on 4th Avenue has been tagged. There is no available water source for power washing it. Tina said that Sara Wood has reported the graffiti to Code Enforcement.

Cornucopia Days Parade: Kent Neighborhood Councils will participate. We will carry our banner in the parade, and we are to meet at 12:30 on July 11 at 5th and Gowe.

Mayor Suzette Cooke made an unexpected and informal visit to our meeting. She offered to answer any questions we had and said she appreciated the “staff  recognition” plants Tina gave to the mayor’s staff. She also talked about the “albatross” unfinished parking garage at Smith and 4th (the City is in process of getting ownership of it); the mobile shower truck for homeless men (the dedication of which she had just attended); a Kent aquatic center (which, if it were to be built, she thinks should be a voted bond issue). Tina asked about the empty lot at 3rd and Cloudy (NW corner) owned by the City and whether we can plant wildflowers there. Mayor Cooke said the best way to get an answer would be to e-mail her and copy Toni, and then Suzette can forward it to the appropriate City office.
